No. It's just that sometimes when you're climbing, it helps to look back. However impossible it seems to move forward, you feel a bit better by seeing how far you have come already.

What hasn't progressed is that men fight for their vested interests. What has changed is that these interests are bigger and involve more people because the perceptive world of one has been enlarged compared to the past.

...yet never has there been as little violence among the race of men as today, never has mankind as a whole been more benevolent and less prone to violence, greed, aggression and all those other little bits we might call our devils. Not by absolute numbers (obviously, since we vastly outnumber any earlier civilisations), but by percentage.

Of course, knowing the world we live in, one might see that as an infinitely depressing message about our past, rather than an uplifting one about the modern world...
