It depends on dialect you choose

ana kwayyes,ana mnee7,ana tamaam ,ana bekhayyr =all mean "I am fine"

When you wanna say just "Fine" you can say"Tab" or Tayyeb(as u mentioned)

minh : Lebanese & Surya
mlih : morocco- Tunisia not all of them says mlih they say minh too

But I started using the rosetta stone software to learn arabic. I notice when words are written in arabic, the vowels (eg, the fatHa, damma, kasra) along with the sukun, all appear in the word. But when I look up those same words in a dictionary, either those vowel symbols are totally absent or there are just dots.

Can anyone tell me why this is the case? Do people just know how to pronounce the word without the vowel being written? It seems like its hard to learn how to say it otherwise.

Sorry if thats confusing.

let me tell you something
Arabic is the most complicated language in the world
these vowels they change the pronounce
Arabic is very accurate language that's why it's the Qur'an language
it's so accurate that the changing in vowels can change the entire meaning
for example:

كُتب-كَتَبَ

كُتب = Kutub = Books

كَتَبَ = ka-ta-ba = wrote



we Arab's there are allots of things that we don't understand
so my advice to you don't learn Fusha because people doesn't speak Fusha
unless you want to read poetry

we normally read without using vowels as you said
but these vowels are important for beginners in arabic language

for example

ana oreed
أنا أريد
i want

a n a - a is instead of fat-ha
n - u can spell it as na coz another a follow n
so naturally its like fat-ha

o r e e d

O - its as you spell it like there is a damma above it
so by time you will not have to write the vowel damma above it
as you already knew how to spell it

ree here like there is kasra

last letter D in the word ''oreed''

there is a sukoon coz its last word and its silent

we Arab's there are allots of things that we don't understand

every body start learning Arabic with dialects nobody starts with fus7a ?!!
u learn fus7a from school . T.V , News Paper...etc
besides nobody speaks fus7a and basically most the dialects word are twisted from fus7a

Aye khoda, well, Id like to learn gulf arabic (khalij?) and thought fus7a was a good standard for that. Id rather not speak with a lot of lebanese/egyptian/magrehbi slang. Its just such a minefield because sometimes books, music, movies etc, you dont know what type of arabic is being used and dont know what you're learning.

I think that its going to be a while before I can read arabic on a computer. The font is so small that I sometimes cant make heads or tails of what is written; I guess the proper sequence would be to learn how to write with vowels and all, then learn to read, then learn to read without all the vowels.

I tried learning arabic last year without learning the script and I was never able to understand the grammar rules. So this time I'm starting from scratch and learning the script. Its going to be slow im sure, but I hope its worth it in the end.

coz they need to know how to read and write which is the 1rst basic step
in da whole world

if you cannot read - you wont be able to write or talk
and fus7a is used in books ..news..tv...and the other stuff

who learn fus7a can learn other dialects easily coz 1rst of all they know the basic

yup, I agree with you... It's good for non-arab to study fus7a 1st rather than dialects one... fus7a is make your day... you can understand news, paper, reading the book... i didn't understand french, but french movie with arabic subtitle make me understand it (not most, because i'm not very good in arabic)

yeah, its hard to find an arab who can talk fus7a with you... but there's some of them speak very closely to fus7a.... so fus7a is not bad I think

and no argument about reading & writting
But my point is he needs years 2 master Arabic then he will be happy 2 understand the news and totally in shock when he founds out he can't understand what people says enough after these years
