I didn't go home this weekend to stay in Coimbra for the Festival os Tunas of the Medicine Faculty. It was amazing, as I was expecting. Besides my beloved TMUC, there were also a feminine tuna of Coimbra, and 4 tunas to contest. This was the first, Hinoportuna, from the North, Viana do Castelo, singing Mariza.

Second, from Lisbon, the EUL. They become really famous some years agora because of a song called "The fat woman".

Then, in my opinion, the best of the night, also from Lisbon, TUIST. They have an awesome solist.

And finally, the most awarded of the night, Scalabituna, from Santarém, singing Azeitonas.

I couldn't end this without posting TMUC. "Coimbra of loves".

I didn't know about Tunas, and this is amazing and very beautiful!!! Thank you so much for making us discovering this, Patricia!! So many musicians on the scene, it's very impressive! And the songs are very nice! And if there are as many Tunas than universities, then Portugal has hell of a potential of musicians!!
You welcome! I love, love, love it. Most of them covers other songs most of the time, but also have originals. In case of TMUC, it is even more special because they have only original songs. Music and lyrics by the students. Here is my favorite, sung by the autor. He did some masterpieces! A pitty he is not there anymore! We aren't students forever...

Hi, Patrícia Thanks for those fascinating YT's. This morning I listened to this:
I love this one LUIS GUERREIRO:"Rosa Enjeitada"
Herminia Silva: "Fado da Sina"
This fado singer (1907-1993) belongs to the big names of fado music. She didnot sing much outside Portugal (though she did concerts in Brasil and Spain) but was especially famous as an artist appearing at the Teatro de Revista, a type of theatre where there was room for fado singers.

Two hours of fado: I couldn't stop listening to CARMINHO
This is my favourite:"Disse Te Adeus"
This is the first Portuguese song I heard when I was in my teens. And what a song it is. I felt in love with it without understanding the language( except amore mio I didn't need to understand the words to understand the song..
One more from Dulce
"nao te quero, eu digo que nao te quero, y de noite, de noite sonho comtigo"...
Obrigado, Ofratko: Dulce Pontes can never be disappointing I love her interpretations of fado songs too
Beatriz Ferreira:Trčs Beijos
Popular and funny stuff. This style is called "vira". It is from the North of the country, Viana do Castelo. Lyrics... usually are one thing but have a completly different meaning! Portuguese can be really naughty They also talk about traditions, but believe me they are so funny live.Augusto Canário & Amigos. Once they came to my city with a group of 100 concertinas!!!
