For those who want to learn "as much as possible," I suggest you go to the most frequently used word list on Wikipedia and get an idea of what words they use. When I started studying Bulgarian I first translated all the words I typically use in English, only to find out later on that the words they use are different because they are highly idiomatic. After memorizing some basic vocabulary, get the 2 volumes (textbooks) of "Intensive Bulgarian," and go through every grammar lesson. If you get through those, then when you ask a difficult grammar question, you'll actually understand the response. It's a complicated language, but the books explain a lot. It's easier to see everything graphed out in a book, than try to understand complex grammar rules by simply knowing a few phrases. The books rock! I'm almost through the first one. : )
