Jimmie Rodgers – A Little Dog Cried lyrics
This is a story of a little orphan pup
Some people don't believe that it's true
But I'll tell it the way it was told to me
And I'll leave that up to you
Some say he was a shepherd dog
Or maybe only part
A mongrel breed by birth perhaps
But a thorughbread at heart
One day he wandered down the road
Lonely, tired, and unfed
He was willing to trade his poor little heart
For just a pat on the head
He came upon a stranger in a garden, I understand
Who gave him bread and water and the puppy licked his hand
Well he thought he'd found his master at last
And at his feet he lay
An angry shouting crowd came by
And they took his master away
He saw them tie his masters hands and take him before a judge
Well they tried to shoo the puppy away
But the little guy just wouldn't budge
He saw him stumble and fall three times
As he followed him down the road
He saw him stumble and fall
Because he carried such a heavy load
Then lightening struck and thunder roared
And all the world grew dark
And it's been said that only those who stayed
Heard a little dog bark
Well you may not believe it
It doesn't sound true, I know
But a little dog cried when his master died
On a hill a long time ago
